Commitment

Scripture Reading: Genesis 24: 15-67

Key Verse: So the servant put his hand under the thigh of  his master Abraham, and swore an oath to him concerning this matte (Genesis 24:9)

Meditation:Abraham was committed to the decision to follow God and see that his son Isaac, stayed were God had led them. He did not want his servant to take Isaac back to the land of the ancestors for any reason. He assured the servant the God would give him the protection and guidance of his angel in order to accomplish the task. Abraham's commitment was well placed.

The servant vowed to carry  out the wishes of his master.  He had always been the person on whom Abraham relied and was even thought to be the only possible recipient of Abraham's estate should there not have been an heir. Emotionally he was a member of the family and he took his responsibilities very seriously. His commitment to his master was as o the Lord.

Rebekah, once she understand she understood she was being asked to leave her family and go on a long journey to a strange country to become the bride of an unknown person, displayed the most courage. We have to read into this commitment an understanding of how God works in a person's life to love and to provide for her. Sh, even in her culture, embodies a tremendous commitment to the promise she expected to become a reality of her future.

Isaac, so calm and submissive to the will of his father, demonstrates a personality earlier profiled in the journey with his father to the sacrificial altar.  He asked legitimate questions but he did not debate the answers. After his mother's death he was meditative and no doubt wondered how and whom God would provided for his needs. A person of miraculous conception and birth, he had ample experience to teach  him to stay committed to God who worked though his father's faith and wisdom.

Thought for the day: God's choices are based on His perfect knowledge. How blessed we will be if we commit ourselves to his plans for our lives.
