Scripture Reading: Genesis 12:1-9
Mediation: 3) The lasting value of any life can be measured by the person's being able to keep the balance between worship and work. In Canaan Abraham built three altars at Shechem, Bethel, and Hebron. The altars sanctified these places in God's eyes. The two most significant symbols of Abraham's life seem to be the tent and the altars. The tent was a reminder of his pilgrim consciousness of moving with God; the altars remind us that where he went he would express his thanksgiving and dependence by worshiping at t a visible altar. Abraham's life life was by no means perfect, but much like King David, we can say that the general trend of his life was Godward.
4) From Abraham's life we can learn something of what to expect from God when we obey Him. Most of what we gain will remain hidden to the human eye. But when Abraham died, all there real estate he owned was his burial place. The rest of the "Promised Land" was still occupied by pagan Canaanites. Most of us will pass from this land with some major unfulfilled hopes. But the fulfillment we can expect is that those who went before us and to those show will come ab us until God's final goal for His kingdom is reached. All of us are invited to be workers together with God. If we are faithful to use the gilts He has given us, we will discover the miracle of God working with us making our labors effective for Him.
Thought for the Day: We should each visualize ourselves as being a significant t link between the past and future of God's plan for the world.
Key Verse: ...there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord (Genesis 12:9)
