Scripture Reading: Mark 14:1-10
Key Verse: She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body
beforehand, to prepare for my burial (Mark 14:8).

Meditation: The setting of this touching incident is in Simon Leper’s home Simon was, no doubt, one of those whom Jesus healed earlier in his ministry. Lazarus, miraculously raised from the dead, was also there along with the disciples. We would expect the disciples to be spiritually sensitive to the evidence of Christ’s work that room.
When Mary sister of Martha, poured costly perfume on Jesus, He was so pleased and indicated she would always be remembered for this act of love. She showed insight into the purpose of Jesus’ life that the other disciples evidently did not comprehend. In fact, they reacted, with understanding, but with indirect criticism towards Jesus accepting this gift. Why this waste? This perfume could have be sold.for a high price and the money given to the poor!
Jesus’ answer reflected his acceptance of Mary’s preparation of body for the ultimate sacrifice for us all: She has done a beautiful thing. She did it to prepare me for my burial. She will always be remembered for doing what she could.
The disciple missed the heart of Jesus; their acts of charity would reflect a price tag. Mary’s spontaneous gift ministered to Jesus as she identified with Him in His coming death.
Thought the Day: Some moments come only once. Let us pray for sensitivity, to the Spirit’s urge to match our dreams and vision with poured-out, extravagant love to Christ.
