God's Ten Rules for Living (9)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:21,22, Exodus 20:13

Key Verse: You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13).

Meditation: Our Judeo-Christian traditions are founded on the Scriptures that teach all human beings are created in God’s image and must be treated with dignity. This divine image distinguishes mankind from the rest of creation and calls for reverence for the life of every person. We must keep sensitized to the sacredness of life as we wrestle with those voices demanding the “right” of physician-assisted suicide and other related concerns. Otherwise we may be sending a false signal to society that anything less than a perfect, trouble-free life is not worth living.

Mother Teresa and her sisters, motivated by the conviction that every one has the right to die with dignity, ministered to people daily in slums of Calcutta, India. They picked up a man, washed him, sang to him  and comforted him in his dying. He looked up at them and said, All my life I have lived like an animal on the streets; now I am dying like an angel.”

As a nation we must remember that all men are created in God’s image and might does not always make war right. While there may be "just wars,” we must go to war only as a last resort when other methods to settle controversies have been exhausted. Otherwise, we would be shedding innocent blood, which like Abel’s blood in the Old Testament, will cry out against us for not allowing them to live out their God-ordained destiny. We must not tamper with this precious gift from God without serious consequences.

Thought for the Day: Only God who gives life has the ultimate prerogative to take it on His time schedule.
