Joseph the Captive

Scripture Reading: Genesis 37:12-36

Key Verse: Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay hands on him. (Genesis 37:27)

Meditation: We who all out lives have enjoyed the freedom of democracy, are cut to the the heart by Joseph being sold by the brothers into slavery. Nothing could be worse that to be put into chains and driven like an animal along a desert pathway to the unholy destination of Egypt. Joseph went from favored son to common slave, a status unknown to him and never experience by any of his family. How could brothers do this to one of their own?

Jeaousy, greed, irrationality drive people to lose their sense of justice and balance. The brothers lost theirs in their mob rage attitude.  No one of us is far from misinterpreting the motives of another. We can attack and punish others by words as well as by our actions. We can take away their reputations and their freedom.

We need to guard our thoughts. work and actions by biblical standards so that we never damage another's person hood.

Thought for the Day: The human freedom of others can bring suffering into our lives. Our trust must be in God to overrule the choices of others.
