Joseph Loved and Hated

Scripture Reading:Genesis 37:2-10, 41:42-45

Key Verse: His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind ( Genesis 37:11)

Meditation:Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob and of his own chosen wife Rachel, had dreams given by God.  He never questioned the authenticity of the dreams. He shared them freely with his father and his brothers.

We might say Joseph was naive or too assuming. Perhaps he should have been more cautious, but God gave him these visions. No doubt God wanted him to let his family know what He Himself was trying to convey for the future. Prophets are nor often welcomed in their own village, as Jesus taught many years later.

However, true to our human shortsighted nature, Joseph's brothers, and even his father, misinterpreted the intent of Joseph's prophesy. They could not see God's hand on them in a blessing that appeared to be for someone else. While God purposed to link Joseph with the plan of salvation for the family, the brothers did not see themselves as included. Intensely jealous, they looked for a way to punish their "upstart" younger brother.

Thought for the Day: Others' treatment of us may cause great pain, but God will provide grace for the present and the redemption for the future.
