Scripture Reading: Exodus 32:15, 16
Key Verse: .. . the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets’, (Exodus 32:16).
Meditation: Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, a Christian publishing group was given permission to have a table at the Moscow Book Fair. After much negotiation, they were given the right to distribute a limited number of New Testaments. Soon the supply was exhausted. A man who had been in line refused to leave without a Testament. He pointed to a box that had held the Bible and said, “Well, just give me the box, please.” They tried to convince him there was no BibIe in the box. With tears in his eyes he said, “At least let me have the box that held the Bible.” To that man the Bible was of such great value that he cherished even the container that had touched the book.
We believe that the Bible is divinely inspired and of inestimable spiritual value. In addition, there is something special about Exodus 20 that makes it particularly significant. In Genesis, many dialogues took place between man and God, but God Himself originally wrote the words of chapter 20. Words literally chiseled into granite stone by God’s own supernatural hand demonstrate eternal value. Unlike the Russian man who had only an empty box, we are looking at a whole chapter written first by God.
For the next ten days we want to look not at what Moses said, but at what God actually wrote. Since the Ten Commandments are addressed to you as a singular pronoun, none of us can escape the personal responsibility of God’s requirements.
Thought for Today: *We all must meet the God of the Ten Commandments first before we are ready to respond to the Christ of the Gospels.
* I am learning about the Gospels of Grace currently and I will be sharing that as well over the next few days too.
