God’s Ten Rules for Living (5)

Scripture Reading: Exodus 20:1-4

Key Verse: You shall not make for yourself an idol... (Exodus 20:4).

Meditation: A little boy was drawing a picture in Sunday school class. When asked, “What are you drawing?” he replied, “I am drawing picture of God.” His teacher responded, “But no one has ever seen God” Johnny answered, “They will when I get finished.”

Exodus 32 demonstrates grave inherent dangers to trying to make a liiuI representation of God. When Israel asked Aaron to make a God Ihey could see, they were not asking for an idol nor were they consciously trying to displace God. They even sacrificed their golden jewelry to help Aaron.

How could Aaron possibly have turned the concept of God into a golden calf? Perhaps it was his inherent depravity. Natural man tends to distort the representation of God. Or perhaps Aaron imitated his pagan neighbors’ religious festivals and symbols. Living animals were often worshiped in Egypt, and the bull symbolized the ultimate power of fertility in the Canaanite worship.

Whatever man chooses to be his god will be inferior to the Creator God. Man tries to manipulate his gods for his own personal benefit. Men will become more and more like their idols and gradually will worship the substitute rather than the real God.

Thought for the Day: The essence of idolatry is worshiping is something God has made rather than the Creator Himself.
